When you call after regular hours, your call will be diverted through to our mobile phone (at no charge to you). The emergency service is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Call before coming to the clinic to allow us to make any special preparations. If you are at all concerned about your pet or need advice, please call us! Ph 357 9993 or 356 9993.

 GENERAL HEALTH CHECKS

A regular annual health check is definitely recommended. This is especially important in the young and older patients. A full health check will always be performed and any concerns you may have re your pets behaviour or health discussed. This is an opportunity to discover any potential problems at an early stage.

 VACCINATIONS

The widespread use of vaccines within the last century has prevented death and disease in millions of animals. Even though some formerly common diseases have now become uncommon, vaccination is still highly recommended because these serious diseases continue to be present in the pet population (e.g. Parvovirus and Distemper in dogs & Panleukopaenia in cats). If contracted, treatment for these diseases may be unsuccessful and certainly very expensive.

For more information on vaccinations for cats and dogs go to cats, dogs or FAQ

 PUPPY PRE-SCHOOL

The aim of the Puppy Pre-school is to educate both the puppy and the owner. The desired outcome is a sociable and socially accepted puppy.

The classes are designed to:

  • Socialize the puppy and make the puppy a good and enjoyable pet to own. They learn to cope with lots of people, loud noises, other dogs, cats, children and novel stimuli such as aerosol sprays, vacuum cleaners, telephones, etc.

  • Train the puppy in basic obedience work such as sit, stay, heel and come using the principles of positive reinforcement.

  • Teach the owner about the normal behaviour of dogs, how to recognize early behavioural problems and how to prevent them, how to house train, how to prevent barking and biting.

  • Provide an opportunity for the puppy to enjoy coming to the veterinary hospital.

  • Educate the owner on other aspects of pet care such as nutrition, dentistry, bathing and grooming that may not be adequately covered in a consultation with a veterinarian.

Puppy Pre-school is specifically designed for puppies in the 6-16 week age range. The programme is not a substitute for the obedience classes, which should be held as formal training in the juvenile stage of a puppy’s’ development. It is a stepping stone on the right road.

Puppy pre-school classes run for 3 weeks for one hour every week at the hospital.

 SPEY AND NEUTER CLINIC

This clinic offers discounted desexing for cats and dogs on Wednesday and Friday mornings. Please phone the hospital on 357 9993 or on the information line on 08 322 1133

TO DESEX OR NOT TO DESEX?

Generally, unless you intend to breed from your pet, then early desexing is the answer!

 DIETARY ADVICE AND WEIGHT CONTROL

This is an extra service, overseen by the Veterinarian and Veterinary staff. In conjunction with all the advice and help you need, we will also organise regular ‘weigh-ins’, recording of your pets progress, and the right food and exercise regimes.

Obesity in animals is just as serious as it is in humans and can cause cardiac and respiratory problems, problems with joints and muscles, and can lead to Diabetes. We will help you to get the excess weight off your pet and help you keep it off, at the same time adding many happy years to your pets’ lifetime.

Commercial 'low calorie' diets are available from the veterinary hospital and provide the basis for effective and safe weight loss e.g. Hills Science Diet Light and Hills Feline R/D. The veterinary nurses at the hospital will be able to advise you on the correct program and feeding regime for your pet.

With some patience and extra care your overweight pet can be treated safely and effectively, with the ultimate goal of prolonging a healthy and happy life! one by the Vet in an ordinary consultation.

Both hospitals have a sterile operating suite and a preparation area to enable excellent care of your pet. We have state of the art anaesthetic monitoring equipment normally only found in modern human hospitals and an extensive range of surgical equipment including the latest orthopaedic surgical instruments.

 HOSPITALISATION

The well being of your pet is our prime focus and their comfort at all times is a necessity. Therefore, we have air conditioned premises with comfortable recovery and hospitalisation areas for both cats and dogs.

These quiet areas are maintained at an ideal temperature, and all patients are kept clean and dry with special bedding provided. 24 hour monitoring is provided for services or intensive care patients, so there is no ‘see how she is in the morning’ here!!

 PET INSURANCE

There is nothing worse than needing to have a surgical procedure performed and having to wait in line in the public health system. That is why you take out Medical Insurance, so that you don’t have to wait, in discomfort or pain for an operation you may never get. The same is true of your pet. Imagine the trauma of deciding not to treat your much loved family member, after an accident or because of illness, because the cost dictated to you your course of action.

Pet Insurance is exactly the same as conventional health insurance. It covers the cost of treatment whether it be surgery because of an accident, or ongoing costs because of illness. In some plans you can even cover the cost of normal operations such as de-sexing.

Talk to your vet about the options and plans that would be right for you.

 MICRO-CHIPPING

"He’s never wandered off before"

Give yourself the peace of mind that if your pet should wander off or, even worse, be stolen, you can now be assured that your pet can be confidently identified with a microchip implant. Your pet can be ‘chipped’ and registered with the New Zealand Companion Animal Register. No more worries about someone else claiming to own your pet.

 NUCLEAR MEDICINE

The hospital now has radiation therapy available for the treatment of thyroid disorders in cats which has previously only been available in Wellington and Auckland.

 MOVING OVERSEAS

Now that you want to move overseas, the focus now shifts to your pets. What to do? You don’t want to leave them behind after all. We can help. We can give you comprehensive advice about MAF checks, certification, vaccination, quarantine and many other bits and pieces. Just call to make an appointment to see the Veterinarian, and we will do everything we can to make the exciting new phase in your life, come off without a hitch.
